Joe Kobylka

Associate Professor Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor Chair of Political Science Department

Joseph F. Kobylka earned a B.A. in Government and History from Beloit College and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota. He joined the SMU faculty in 1983 and has published three books, including The Supreme Court and Legal Change, along with numerous journal articles. His teaching focuses on constitutional law, judicial decision-making, and American political thought. He contributed to the PBS series The Supreme Court and is currently completing a biography of former Justice Harry A. Blackmun.

Kobylka has received multiple SMU research grants and numerous awards for teaching and service, including the SMU "M" Award and the H.O.P.E. Professor of the Year. He is also a member of SMU's Academy of Distinguished Teachers and serves as faculty advisor to the Political Science Symposium and Pi Sigma Alpha.
