Diana Newton

Senior Fellow, Lecturer & Colin Powell Teaching Fellow of the Tower Center for Public Policy and International Affairs

M. Diana Helweg Newton holds a J.D. from Boston University School of Law and a B.A. from Yale University. She is a Senior Fellow and Colin Powell Teaching Fellow at the John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies at Southern Methodist University, where she lectures on Public Policy and International Affairs. Newton also speaks on U.S. relations with Japan, Korea, and China.

Previously, she was an International Affairs Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and a Hitachi International Affairs Fellow in Tokyo, where she led the Council’s Economic Task Force on Japan. Her earlier roles include serving as Executive Assistant to the Deputy National Security Advisor and Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the State Department. She began her legal career at Morrison & Foerster in Washington, D.C. Newton currently serves on the boards of Deerfield Academy and the International Center for Transitional Justice, as well as on the Hitachi IAF Selection Committee and the National Program Committee at CFR.
